What exactly is the Learning the Art of Travel Program ?
The Learning the Art of Travel Program is a component of our tours in which we teach
the traveler about the “how” of traveling. How to choose the best
food stall; how to get yourself across town to a guest house you’ve heard
about so you can check it out; how to cope with people asking you for money, etc.
We don’t want to simply explain to you that there are cultural norms
that require a different set of tools to navigate within that culture. We want
to give you these tools, teach you to use them, and navigate right alongside of
you.
-
How does this program work?
Over the course of the journey, we will provide you with pertinent information
about that culture as well as information about how to navigate within that culture.
This will be in addition to the points we cover in the Learning the Art of
Travel Program, the printed material you will have received after completing
the registration process.
We have structured the trip so that you will have numerous opportunities to
practice with these tools. In addition, throughout your trip we will provide a
forum for you as an individual, and for the group, to discuss and understand your
experiences.
-
Who determines if and when we practice these skills?
You do. We will give you the information, give you opportunities to get into
situations where you can use it, and we’ll talk about it afterwards with
you. The attitude with which you approach this trip is up to you.
-
Do I have to do things in the ways you suggest?
No. If you want to try something totally different, no problem -- as long
as it’s culturally sensitive. Actually, depending on your level of travel
experience, we recommend you try as many different methods as you can. As far
as value for money is concerned, we think it makes sense for you to try what we
suggest.
-
If I’ve got some traveling experience, can I still go?
Of course. Our trips are for travelers of all experience levels. We feel that
your experiences as a traveler can only add to the experiences of the group and
could prove to be invaluable to others who have not traveled as much. Sharing
experiences and learning from each other is what the program is all about.
-
Do I still need to buy a guidebook if I am traveling with NSJ?
Most people choose to buy guide books so that they can learn about where they
are going. NSJ thinks that having a guide book is a good idea not only for learning
about where you are headed, but it can be helpful in further exploration outside
the group.
